Canterbury, 25 July – 7th August, 2010

97th Championship of the British Isles at Kent University.
21 sections in the Sports Complex Centre - smack-bang in the middle of the campus - including seven junior. Weekend swisses U-150/ U-125. 5 day first and second weeks: U-180/ U-160/ U-140/ U-120. Major Open.
Top seeded Michael Adams, 38, currently ranked No. 35 in the world rankings, bids strongly to be the highest ever scorer in the British since William Napier scored 8½/11 at the inaugural event, Hastings, 1904. (He later beat HE Atkins 2½-1½ in the play-off). Mickey will have to score a higher – the 1992 record, 10/11, set by Julian Hodgson, has remained for perhaps too long – if he is to keep his Elo rating, let alone establish a new ceiling. (The 1976 record – consecutive wins in the opening rounds – still stands at nine. Will this fall too?)
