UPDATE: British Chess Championships, University of Kent Canterbury

A progress report on the 97th British Chess Championships is beneath.  Also three high quality photographs one of leader Michael Adams, one of the spectators watching the top boards and one of Ali Roy who was competing in the Under-16s championships.

The 97th British Chess Championships are underway at the Sports Centre at the Kent University in Canterbury.  At the half-way stage England's No 1, Michael Adams, had given his rivals the slip and led by a full point. In the first week of games the 38-year-old Cornishman, and former world championship finalist, out-classed most his rivals. Adams is now odds-on to re-take the title he first won in1989.

So far, only Nick Pert, the No 2 seed here, has managed to hold Adams to a draw.  But it's not over yet. Adams faces five more grueling games this week. Chess grandmasters, Stephen Gordon, Stuart Conquest, Danny Gormally and Simon Williams, and top women's player, Jovanka Houska, are waiting to test their mental powers against him.  The championships end on Friday, 6 August 2010.  Games start at 2.15 pm, spectators are welcome and entry is free.

Leading positions after 6 rounds: Michael Adams 5½, Stephen Gordon 4½, Stuart Conquest 4½, Danny Gormally 4½, Simon Williams 4½, Adam Hunt 4½, Jovanka Housha 4½."

Best wishes
