England's Newest #chess League

England's newest chess league, the Central London Chess League, is set to start this autumn. League matches, for teams of 5 players, will be played at venues in Central London (within Zone 1 of the London Underground). A central venue, in Pimlico, will be available if needed. All games will finish on the night – there will be no adjournments or adjudications.

The idea for the new league emerged from a survey of over 100 chess leagues in the UK and Ireland carried out earlier this year. The survey found that 80% of the leagues used a quickplay time control as their mandatory or default method of finishing games. But the proportion is much lower in London itself and it can be hard to find enough league games with a finish on the night. There seems to be a gap in provision, and the new League aims to fill that gap.

The deadline for team entries is 31 July 2011. More details on the League website at http://clcl.org.uk. Entries or any queries should be sent to the League organiser, James Toon (email: james.toon@mac.com; telephone: 07531 706438).

Here is a list of FIDE registered tournaments in England. There will be a separate entry for each section of each event (e.g. Golders Green Rapidplay = 4 sections, 4 registrations). If you see any of mine missing, do let me know!

Scroll down to the bottom to access the archive of events.

Only games where at least one of the players has a published standard FIDE rating will be rated, and included in the rating calculations of the unrated player. Where both players are rated, the game will affect both players and will be included in the calculations for both players.
